Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle form of bodywork that focuses on the craniofacial system and fascial system in the body. The craniosacral system involves the motion of cerebral spinal fluid which moves through the ventricles of the brain and through the spinal column. The fascial system is a network of tissue that surrounds all of our bones, muscles, tendons, nerves and organs. Injuries, stresses, strains, sprains and other effects of working, playing and living can cause structural misalignments and imbalances in the body. A craniosacral therapy practitioner can gently release restrictions to the fascial systems which can alleviate physical pain and discomfort and restore structural and energetic balance to the body. Craniosacral therapy is used to address neck pain, low back pain, shoulder pain, migraines, tension headaches, sinus congestion, gallbladder pains, intestinal cramping, intestinal adhesions, constipation, breathing problems, memory issues, sleep issues and more.
What can I expect from a craniosacral treatment?
A craniosacral treatment is different from massage therapy in that the patient is fully clothed and the practitioner applies only very light touch to the body. The amount of pressure applied to the body is very light, generally about 5 grams or the weight of a nickel. Sessions generally last 45 minutes and patients report that they feel relaxed, rejuvenated, and physical pain levels are decreased after treatment. Restrictions in the body can hold emotions as well as physical discomfort. During or after a craniosacral treatment, you may notice shifts in your emotional health as your body integrates the structural and energetic shifts in your body. It is recommended that you allow enough time after your appointment to take a walk and allow the treatment to settle. Patients may need as little as one treatment to resolve symptoms although several treatments are recommended for optimal results.
